PIET personnel includes researchers, technical staff, administrative personnel, invited researchers and students (undergraduate and graduate). The members of the Scientific Council must possess at a minimum a Master in Science and be appointed to a tenured university position. Additionally, each must have on-going research activities and academic responsibilities within PIET. The professional personnel is made up of researchers and academics who belong to one of the confederated units or laboratories and work on a PIET research project which is directed by at least one member of the Scientific Council. The technical staff are professionals who work in the laboratories and units of PIET helping the researchers and doctoral students on their research projects. The PIET administrative staff is made up of the Coordinator, a secretary, a project assistant and a driver. Its principal functions are to promote the research and educational focus of PIET, ensure the proper functioning of the laboratories and stimulate collaboration among them. Paperwork and communication (fax, telephone, mail, Internet) are centralised in the administrative office . In addition, the office coordinates the customs clearance of equipment, reagents and materials, the activities and schedule of the driver and the administration of the project fund accounts with the UNA Foundation. The students associated with PIET perform investigative work as one of the requirements for their academic degree, working under the supervision of a researcher who serves as tutor and supplier of materials and, at times, scholarships with which the student is able to complete his/her studies. In general, there are four types of students (Specialty, Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral) doing investigative work in PIET. The Specialised students receive training for one or two months in a specific technique or methodology. The Bachelor students belong to a professional degree program and prepare their theses working on the research projects associated with PIET during a period of 6-18 months. The Master and Doctorate students are professionals in the above mentioned fields of investigation associated with a graduate program of a national or regional university.
